Less than a month ago, New School students gathered at the Sapphire Lounge on the Lower East Side for the inaugural AXM art showcase, where they shared their passion for art, music and dance.
The success of the event prompted its curators, Lang students Chelsea Domaleski and Natalie Marrero, to start a monthly series dedicated to student art. The next AXM event will take place on Friday, May 3, featuring artwork by Tess Senay, Cult Class Art, DJ Alex Ashmun, and with music by James Tillman.
The two curators created AXM Fridays with the underexposed talent of their university in mind. Up-and-coming artists often struggle to fund gallery space, but the duo hope to ease exposure to their works. The Lang students seek a chance to build an energetic hub for students and artists.
“We both believe the artists in our generation are really talented,” Marrero said. “So, why not have a fun time at a party and celebrate some really beautiful and meaningful art?”
Last month’s show featured musicians Sam Wilkes — a Lang graduate — Ria Boss, and The Drippy Eye Collection, a New York-based psychedelic band. Lang dance students Deena Spaner and Kia Labeija performed freestyle dances throughout the evening. The Sapphire Lounge’s gallery space contained video and a photo series from artist and current Lang student Marcos Gasc.
“We want to give everyone an equal opportunity so that each artist can at one time show their work,” Marrero said.
Students hoping to submit artwork can contact AXM via email, Facebook or Tumblr.
