The New School Narwhals’ athletics department has launched a new soccer program this semester. The soccer club joins the Narwhals’ basketball, cross country, and cycling programs, as the university continues to increase its opportunities for students interested in athletics.
“I started the program, got the people together, and started training and contacted the athletics department in the process,” says Parsons sophomore Ashim Joshi.
Joshi serves as a player and coach while Parsons sophomore Osvehanis Osman is the team manager. The team operates without a faculty advisor.
A group of 15 students have signed up to compete in matches against other schools while about 30 students practice regularly within the New School’s club.
The club meets on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pier 40 at Chelsea Piers. Practices are open to all interested students.
“The main aim is for everyone to have fun and play good soccer,” Osman says.
Lang freshman and member of the soccer club, Leopold Schlaefereit, says that the club plans to expand in the near future.
“We are hoping to become a varsity sports team as soon as possible,” he says.
Joshi says that the team’s ultimate goal is to become an established college soccer program.
“Sport meets are always fun,” Osman says. “Not only do you meet other students you would not normally meet outside of your school division, you get to appreciate the sport and I’m sure you’d have a good time, whether you came to play or watch.”
The club has a Facebook page where Joshi and Osman can be reached. The team’s first match will be against Sarah Lawrence College on November 23 at 2 p.m., at Pier 40.
