Last month, the elusive graffiti artist Banksy set up residency on the streets of New York City. Every day, he unveiled a new public artwork in one of the five boroughs, and alerted New Yorkers to its presence by posting each piece onto his website. Most of them are in his usual stenciled graffiti style, but he also did sculptures, art performances, and mobile pieces displayed on trucks. Many of the artworks were immediately painted over, or covered by other graffiti artists, but some New Yorkers stepped in to preserve Banksy’s work, covering some of them with plexiglass so they wouldn’t get destroyed. Although Banksy’s artworks are rapidly disappearing, the Free Press sought out some of the remaining pieces throughout the city.
