Former international student advisor, Jamilah Moudiab, filed a civil rights lawsuit on Friday against The New School for harassment in the workplace. Moudiab, who was hired in 2011, left her job at International Student Services last March, alleging that her coworkers attacked her with racial slurs on a regular basis, according to an article from the New York Post.
She accused her supervisor, Monique Ngozi Nri, of telling her that the university was a “religious free zone” and that she should not wear her hjiab to work.
According to Moudiab, Nri was not the only person to harass her. On numerous occasions, she allegedly found rosaries and Christian crosses on her desk, which she interpreted as making a mockery of her religious faith. She also claimed that co-workers harassed her for putting up photos of Trayvon Martin after his death, who she felt had been unjustly targeted and killed.
Reached for comment, administrators at The New School would not discuss the details of the lawsuit. President Van Zandt has not yet issued a statement.
