At the New School, the New Card Cash system is an often-overlooked source of student expenditure. I was able to become quite familiar with this process when my parents dumped the spending money they were going to give me onto my New Card. I used the places on this list not only for the goods they provided, but also for survival.
10. Village Copier
Buying books for school is a frustrating process. Even more frustrating is buying course packets that have no resale value. The source for these packets, Village Copier, accepts New Card Cash. While it is not the biggest deal, it certainly saves some cash.
9. B.C. Cleaners
When the water main broke in the basement of the new University Center, the residents of Kerry Hall lost all access to the laundry services. In the following weeks, the laundry delivery system hadn’t yet been figured out, and I was getting desperate; by desperate, I mean having days where I wore shorts and never left the building. That was until I discovered B.C. Cleaners. They accept New Card Cash and they had my laundry cleaned and beautifully folded in a day.
8. Subway
Not to be mistaken with the underground train system, this sandwich restaurant is a global chain so it needs no introduction. However, the store on 14th Street between Second and Third Avenue is the best subway I have been to. The food quality is high, and the workers are friendly.
7. The New Dining Hall
The New Dining Hall in the University Center feels like it should be higher on this list. However, until it improves its variety, it will remain relatively low on my rating system. The burgers, pizza and steaks are very good, but again, more variety would be great.
6. CVS Pharmacy
Ah, CVS. What can’t you get there? Tired of the dorm-distributed toilet paper? Need new headphones? Want to eat mac n’ cheese from the comfort of your own home? Sick and need all the NyQuil in the world? CVS, baby.
5. Whole Foods
The nation’s leading grocery store for healthy foods accepts New Card Cash. If you like organic milk and hummus, this is the place for you. Then again, if you like organic milk and hummus, you probably already knew that.
4. Famiglia Pizza
The best pizza place I’ve been to in NYC. I would personally recommend the pepperoni and broccoli pizza, although I am biased as a known broccoli lover. Do note that if you order for delivery, you can’t pay with New Card Cash.
3. Burger Joint
Tucked away on Eighth Street, the Burger Joint used to be an NYU campus card exclusive. Now it is one of the best places to eat with friends. The restaurant accepts New Card Cash and offers one heck of a burger.
2. BLT Burger
BLT Burger has some fantastic burgers, but what really stands out are their milkshakes. When I had just gotten my wisdom teeth out, I ordered a milkshake each day here. I would personally recommend the Cookie Monster, which is a cookies ‘n cream and cookie dough blend.
1. Napkin Burger
The holy grail of New Card Cash locations, 5 Napkin Burger has it all: fantastic wings, delicious fries and the best burger on this list. The atmosphere is good as well. I might recommend not bringing a date here though, because the food is almost too good. You might spend more time stuffing your face than being civil and romantic.
