The New School’s intramural volleyball and soccer leagues started playing on September 10 at the McBurney YMCA on West 14th Street. Any New School student can register and compete in weekly games on Wednesdays from 7:00-9:00pm for both sports and Friday from 7:30-9:00pm for soccer.
Students must complete a registration form and a student health insurance waiver before they are allowed to participate. Both forms can be found on TNS’s Athletics and Recreation website. Walk-on players can join at any time during the fall semester if there is room. Staff and faculty are also invited to compete as long as there’s space on a team.
Soccer team rosters range from six to ten players and there is an 11-team league cap. The games are four on four and consist of two twenty minute halves.
Volleyball matches are six on six and the league has a five team cap with a minimum of eight players on a team. Teams play three sets to twenty-one in each match and the team that wins two out of three sets wins the match.
Intramural sports allow students who have never played a certain sport to compete against those with years of experience in a fun and relaxed environment.
“It seems really fun so far,” said Anna Tedstron, a sophomore at Parsons who plays soccer on the FA 1 team at McBurnery YMCA. “Pretty fast paced. There’s definitely a lot more people here than I thought there would be.”
“It’s fun to laugh and meet new people,” said Carolyn Kahn, a junior at Lang who plays volleyball on the Scoregasm team. “It’s much less pressure and whether you lose or win it doesn’t matter.”
“It feels so good to get back into volleyball,” said Casey Barber, also a sophomore at Parsons.
The McBurney YMCA is a block west of sixth avenue on the north side of 14th street. New School students get in for free with their New School ID cards and are encouraged to cheer on fellow classmates during game days.
