Looking for coffee, desserts, sandwiches, or just a place to wind down, or maybe even wind up? The New School’s University Center has just the place for you. The Event Café, located directly below the entrances’ left staircase, is the latest addition to hit New School grounds.
The purple neon text—from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass, created by NY-based artist Glenn Ligon and designed by architecture firm Skidmore, Ownings & Merrill—bordering the staircase walls bothered some New School students.
“I don’t know what’s going on with the purple lettering but I guess I kind of like the idea. I just don’t understand it really,” said Sarah Sanon, a student at the New School.
“Aren’t we rebranding with all red? I can’t believe they did purple,” Sanon said.
The purple lettering wasn’t the only complaint about the new space, two students commented on the potential for more comfortable chairs and lounge space.
“Maybe it would be a little better, maybe I’m just being selfish, but if we had couches or something it would make it more comfortable,” said Jenna Lee, a senior at Parsons.
“I don’t know if the chairs are that suitable for down here, they look kind of sterile and sad but other than that, it’s okay,” Sanon said as she observed the area, noticing its details. “I don’t care for the large stairs either, or how the large stairs turn into more narrow stairs.”
But overall the positive feedback outweighed the negative.
“I would definitely use [the space]. I think the whole signage is pretty cool too; there are good little artistic additions,” said Jermaine Barker, a New School student.
“Even though [the café] is awkwardly placed, and no one is probably going to notice it down here behind this wall, the food is super good…I’ve had a salad and it’s kind of better than upstairs,” said Sanon.
Although the mesmerizing neon work installation is hard to glance away from make sure you’re paying attention and try not to stumble.
