DVZ: Live Chat Updates

On Thursday, February 26, the Free Press hosted a live chat with President David Van Zandt. The idea was to provide the New School community with a platform in which students, faculty and staff could ask President Van Zandt questions directly. Over 40 questions were asked and an average of 70 viewers followed the hour-long conversation.

Unfortunately, time ran out before Van Zandt was able to answer all of the questions. However, this week he did provide answers to the last two questions in the queue (see below), and agreed to answer more at the end of the semester. We’ll be posting more questions and answers in our April issue and on our website, newschoolfreepress.com.

NSFP: You mentioned that “we have that handled” when speaking to the issue of security in the new building. With that in mind, how exactly would security be maintained if the L2 space was open to the entire University wide if the hours are restricted to 9am-6pm?

DVZ: Security is our top priority when it comes to opening the lower level two space and facilities in the University Center to the entire student body.

All students can access the gym, study lounge, arts studios and practice rooms from the Kerrey Hall entrance at 65 5th Avenue from 9 am to 6 pm, seven days a week.

After 6 pm, door alarms will be set and access to these spaces will be restricted by key card to Kerrey Hall residents only. Door alarms between the academic and residence hall are active 24 hours a day. Beginning at 6 pm, security guards will regularly patrol the area and respond to any door alarms.

To access lower level two between 9am and 6pm, all non-resident students must sign-in online, as well as leave their ID with the security guard on duty in the lobby of Kerrey Hall.

Why can’t the dance program utilize the studio in the University Center? This would be a great space for our studies!

The studio space on lower level two in the University Center is a beautifully furnished room, with a sprung floor (a surface able to absorb shocks) available for Pilates, dance, and other activities. Student Services is currently working with Eugene Lang College, other academic programs, and the registrar on the logistics for its use, as it requires scheduling and maintenance considerations. We will be sure to pass along any updates.
