The Journalist and The Imprisonment

Published

Journalism has seen a rise in death and imprisonment rates over the past seven years. About 2,500 journalists have been imprisoned overseas as of 2015, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Most recently, Jason Rezaian, a New School alumnus and correspondent for the Washington Post from 2012 to 2016 in Tehran, was released from imprisonment on Jan. 17, 2016. Rezaian was arrested, along with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, by Iranian government security forces and charged with espionage and propaganda.

In response, The New School Free Press interviewed Journalism & Design students to see what they thought about the potential dangers that come with entering the field of journalism.
