2016 Grammy Awards: The Music Industry Is a Glorious Mess But I Love it

This year’s 58th annual Grammy Awards were as star studded as ever, but with all the glorious mishaps we all know to expect and love. I mean, they’re just bound to happen when broadcasting live, and that’s part of what makes events like these so amazing. In light of these moments the show was still as entertaining and inspiring as ever.

Even before The Grammys had begun Taylor Swift had already won two awards. One for Best Vocal Pop Album for “1989” and Best Music Video of the year for “Bad Blood.” In the video below you can see as she and BFF Selena Gomez excitedly freak out over the news.

Ed Sheeran won Best Song of the Year for “Thinking Out Loud,” an event which pretty much made my night. Surprisingly, this is Sheeran’s first Grammy win. Best friend Taylor Swift, who was nominated in the same category, looked like she could not have been more pleased and was seen running up to Sheeran as he went up on stage to accept his award. She congratulated him on Twitter moments later. Ah, friendship goals.

Adele killing it as per usual, singing “All I Ask” and, despite brief audio issues throughout the performance, powered on while reminding us, once again, why we should all be absolutely obsessed with her.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton: An American Musical” live performance was mind blowing and reminded me how much I am dying to actually see the show. Even though the show is impossible to see without paying on average upwards of 411 dollars . The musical won Best Musical Theater Album and Miranda’s acceptance speech was nearly as enjoyable as the performance itself.

Kendrick Lamar’s moving performances of “The Blacker the Berry” and “All Right” from his album “To Pimp a Butterfly,” featured the artist in handcuffs and in glow-in-the-dark tribal paint. The powerful performance ended with the artist standing in front of an outline of Africa and the word “Compton”. For me, his performance was incredibly thought provoking.

Meghan Trainor’s tearful acceptance of the Best New Artist award was all the sweetness and love that we would expect from the “Lips Are Movin” singer.

Lady Gaga completely morphed herself into David Bowie for an emotional tribute to the deceased artist, performing hits such as: “Space Oddity”, “Rebel Rebel” and “Changes”, just to name a few. The beginning of the performance was mind blowing as they many of Bowie’s numerous trademarks were projected onto Lady Gaga’s face. The performance received a standing ovation from the crowd, and it was probably one of the best performances of the night.

Taylor Swift received Album Of The Year for her album “1989.” Potentially in response to Kanye West’s controversial lyrics about her in his new song “Famous,” Swift had a very strong award acceptance well-prepared. “I want to say to all the young women out there, they’re going to be people who along the way will try and undercut your success or take credit for your accomplishments. Or your fame. But if you just focus on the work and you don’t let those people side track you. Someday when you get where you’re going; you’ll look around and you will know it was you and the people who love you who put you there. And that is the greatest feeling in the world” Swift said upon receiving her award. She is also the first woman to win this award twice.

As the night came to a close Beyonce graced the stage to present Record of the Year to Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson for “Uptown Funk,” but was quickly cut off by LL Cool J, to bring us Pitbull, Travis Barker, Joe Perry and Robin Thicke.

Can’t wait to see what happens at next year’s Grammy’s when Adele is nominated for her album “25” –despite it’s 2016 release date– until then we will just have to keep on listening.
