Starting this summer, The New School will reopen the 20th Street Residence Hall to New School students after two years of leasing it to the New York Institute of Technology.
The 20th Street Residence Hall, which has been owned by the New School for 12 years will finally get back into the School’s Dorm-Repertoire after NYIT’s lease expires on May 22nd.
When 617 beds became available in fall 2013 due to the finished construction of Kerrey Hall, The New School had a lot more beds than students applying for housing. According to the Assistant Vice President of Student housing and Residence Life, Robert Lutomski, this is the reason they decided to close down the dormitories on 84 William St. which offered space for 400 students, to cut down on unused beds.
Still the school had a surplus of 217 beds.
“We leased out 20th Street which had 200 beds to NYIT as they were in need of beds for a couple of years,” Lutomski said.
“We then had an unexpected spike in returning students applying for our housing so we began renting beds at 92nd Street Y and apartments at Stuyvesant Town to accommodate all TNS students wanting housing,” Josephine Parr, the Senior Director of Communications, said.
Now that the lease of the Institute of Technology expires, the school will start placing students back into the Residence Hall for summer and the fall.
With the reopening of the 20th Street Residence Hall for university students the School will give up its leases at 92nd Street Y and the Stuyvesant Town residence as the beds in all the New School owned buildings will be enough again to accommodate all students looking for housing.
The apartments at 20th Street are available for mostly sophomore, junior, senior and graduate students. It offers a terrace, practice rooms, and suite style living with single, double and triple rooms.
