On the seventh episode of “Free Press Live,” The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music seniors Quincy Chimich and Nathan Kamal perform two self-written pieces, “Moment Explosion,” by Kamal, and “Sinking Inward,” by Chimich. The duo met spring of 2015 in Associate Professor of Jazz and world renowned bassist Reggie Workman’s Coltrane ensemble.
The first song performed, “Moment Explosion,” was written in March 2015. Kamal and Chimich first performed the piece in April 2016 with a quartet during the International Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland.
“I actually wrote it specifically for Quincy,” Kamal said. “The school will send I believe six quartets to the Jazz Festival every year and Quincy was the pianist that I really wanted to take with me so we were really lucky to do that together.”
Chimich wrote the second piece “Sinking Inward,” also with Kamal in mind.
“It’s mostly inspired by modern film music and the moments in the film where there is no dialogue but just action,” Chimich said. “With the music and the dynamic images that can come out of that combination of things, I wrote the music based on that sort of imagery.”
Nathan Kamal will be performing at The New School of Drama’s School production of Euripides’ Orestes from December 8-10. You can find more about Nathan on http://www.nathankamal.com/
