The New School Free Press looks at the street style of New York’s chicest dogs this spring.
In New York City, the crosswalk is your runway. From the Dior-touting residents of the Upper East Side to grunged-out college students in Greenwich Village, New Yorkers have a global reputation for sporting the latest fashion trends.
But, chic street style doesn’t have to be restricted to humans. The city’s posh pups most certainly live up to their famed owners. In this special issue of “Fashion on Fifth,” The New School Free Press took to the streets in search of the most fashionable dogs the city has to offer this spring.
Lulu:
Lulu, a one-and-a-half-year-old American Staffordshire terrier and rottweiler mix, turns heads everywhere she goes.
“She’s been a star the entire time, from Times Square down to here [the Union Square Greenmarket],” her owner said.
Lulu is a fashion conscious-pup and often sports show-stopping designer garments. Her iconic hot pink knit jumper is a maxbone collaboration with Christian Cowan.
In her free time, she enjoys sleeping, eating and playing football.
Milo and Odys:
Milo, an eleven-year-old chihuahua named after the lead character of “The Phantom Tollbooth,” and eight-year-old mini-dachshund Odysseus, or Odys for short, come as a pair but could not be any more different.
Fawn-coated chihuahua Milo’s interests include fashion and Netflix.
“He feels like he’s the man of the house,” one of his owners said. “But when he’s out-and-about, he’s super timid.”
Smooth-coated black and tan mini-dachshund Odys prefers to take advantage of the hustle and bustle New York has to offer him. He has an acquired taste for balloons and plastic bottles.
Together, Milo and Odys make sure to keep up with their fans on Instagram. Although they have their differences, their owners describe them as “forever pups.”
At the Union Square Greenmarket, Milo wears a custom-made Grumpy Dog Club jumper, and Odys sports a graphic 80’s space-themed hoodie from vegan pet company JUST FRED.
When they are not at the Union Square Greenmarket, you can find these best friends at Boris & Horton, a popular dog-friendly cafe in the East Village.
Malibu:
Malibu is a one-and-a-half-year-old mini-schnauzer with a passion for fashion. Don’t be fooled — although she has a West Coast name, she is a quintessential East Coast girl.
Malibu has a chic sense of style. Here, the miniature schnauzer sports a silver puffer jacket with short gray sleeves. The main feature is a gray zip detail along the back. To accessorize, Malibu wears a complimentary pink bow in her hair.
Aside from being a New York fashionista, Malibu loves to go to the dog park with her friends, play fetch in her apartment and snuggle.
Several dogs approached Malibu during her photoshoot.
“She has a maybe-boyfriend,” her owner said. “She has a crush. It’s complicated. She likes him more than he likes her, I think.”
Lola:
Lola is a ten-year-old Pomeranian with a lot of spunk and a desire to accessorize. Her collar often matches her leash.
When she isn’t playing dress up, you can find her at the movie theater catching up on the latest films with her Mom. Her nimble size makes it easy for her to be snuck in.
Lola shares a common disillusionment with the New York dating scene. Like many city-dwellers, she is in search of love.
“Obviously she’s looking for a boyfriend,” her owner said. “That’s why she’s dressed up.”
Maddie:
Maddie is an eleven-year-old shih tzu mini poodle mix. She has been with her father since she was six months old.
Maddie sports her “go-to” sweater that she cannot leave the apartment without. She prefers sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion. Her black, red and white argyle sweater was handed down by a friend.
Store-bought clothes do not fit Maddie properly. Therefore, most of her pieces are custom-made, such as her puffy jacket from Wagwear.
Maddie enjoys frequenting the dog park by Stuyvesant High School.
“She loves being with people,” her owner said. “We go to dog parks so she can play with other dog owners.”
