This week on Fashion on Fifth, denim comes in different colors, but only one style. No, that isn’t a middle-aged dad walking towards you on Fifth Avenue, it’s just a New School student in their favorite pair of baggy jorts. Whether you have a second-hand pair from the thrift that definitely belonged to a man three times your size, or just bought a new pair that’s actually meant to fit you, finding the perfect pair of jorts is a must as we enter this sunny new season.

Kelly is looking forward to wearing her dresses and shorts all spring. But more specifically, she is excited about her jean shorts, known among us art school students as ‘jorts’. Kelly tells me, “I just can’t get away from them. I’ve been wearing jorts every single day.” Paired with a leopard print top, bedazzled belt, knee-high socks, and classic Adidas Sambas, Kelly clearly has her spring style dialed in. I could learn a thing or two from her about having a jacket even when it’s warm out, because by the end of the day it got chilly and I was shivering in my tank top.

Emilia is excited to channel her inner Victorian woman this spring by wearing shorts that are so long, that only a “little bit of slutty ankle” is left showing. Dead bugs are her favorite type of accessory.  Beetles encased in resin hang from her layered beaded necklaces, Emilia’s own handiwork. Her friends constantly collect bees, beetles, and other dead creepy crawlies for her to make into jewelry. Now that spring flowers are beginning to bloom, I suspect her favorite insects will be in high supply.

Even though Blue is sporting her favorite jorts on this beautiful day, she tells me she’s generally less happy in warm weather because winter is her preferred season. With her zip-up boots, faded shorts, white button-up, and cross necklace layered on top, she clearly knows how to dress for her least favorite time of the year. Look on the bright side, Blue, now your smoke breaks will be a little less bone-chilling!

When the weather is too warm for jeans but you aren’t quite ready to part with them, Ella’s solution is to whip out the jorts. They serve as the perfect middle man for this transitional season, plus she finds them more comfortable than short-shorts for sitting in class. Her tall boots, Wallace and Gromit t-shirt, and Prada bag create an outfit with a sense of humor, and I love it.

Whether it’s a light wash, dark wash, short, long, cutoff, or cuffed, it’s time to make jorts your new staple. Pair them with boots, with sneakers, or even with flip flops for the ultimate summer look. ‘Tis the season of the jorts, and you don’t want to let it pass you by without joining in on the fun.
