Crazy cosplays left and right, New York Comic Con is a hub for DIY fashionistas. From anime, to Stranger Things, to a buff Little Mermaid, people didn’t hold back when it came to showing up and showing out for Comic Con.
Joe and his sons do a Venomized theme each year at Comic Con. They travel from New Jersey for New York Comic Con every year, and have been cosplaying as a family for six years. The boys’ head pieces are made out of bicycle helmets with foam details and they painted morph suits for the body. All three looks are fully homemade with months of preparation.
Tiffany Knight dressed as an original steampunk character. Knight has always been into steampunk, and drew inspiration from a character she used to roleplay around 10 years ago. The under corset and overskirt are homemade, and all utility kilts are altered. Most elements are repurposed.
Kaley dressed as Ms. Gotham City because she wanted something femine and super sparkly. All the props are homemade and the missile launcher was fully bedazzled by hand. “The bedazzling took me the longest time, but it was very satisfying and fun”, she said.
Ron Maxwell wore his Ghostbuster cosplay, which he built off of a proton pack he found on eBay. He added the details and lights, as well as a sound system which makes fun sounds and coordinated lights with the push of a button. Maxwell loves “Ghostbusters” because “it’s a job, anybody can be a ghostbuster, there’s no gender or body type, plus you get to save the city.” It was a big hit when he wore it one year on Halloween and has been Maxwell’s go-to costume ever since.
Vanta dressed as Pyramid Head from “Dead by Daylight”. The head piece, the sword, and top were all homemade. The head piece is made of EVA foam and took about a day to make. Vanta wanted to challenge herself to create large props which was the inspiration for the look
Jenna is dressed as Endeavor from the anime, “My Hero Academia.” The orange detailing is all hand cut and spray painted, which took her about three months to complete. Anime helped get Jenna out of her shell, and she has been watching it for years.
Inspired by their own childhoods, Adrian and Johnny dressed as Cynthia and Centro from “Rugrats”. Adrian made the entire costume with lots of glue gunning and sewing, and even incorporated upcycled items such as Johnny’s Centro mask made from recycled cardboard.
Jenna and AJ dressed as Homelander and the Deep from “The Boys” comic. They “threw things together” for this costume, but have planned out a different look for each day. They liked the idea of highlighting the most “disgusting aspects” of each character, like AJ’s octopi which are named Ambrosia and Timothy.
Candy dressed as Jinx from “League of Legends” and made everything she’s wearing. The striped fabric is hand painted and the belt is made with pleather with 3D-printed bullets. The rocket launcher, Fishbones, is made from EVA foam and cement glue. She started creating this cosplay in late June, and finished two days before the convention.
Christopher dressed up as Klaus Hargreeves from “The Umbrella Academy”. He purchased most pieces from Amazon but put together his necklace with beads from Michaels. Christopher’s inspiration for this cosplay was their love for the Netflix show, as well as the connection they feel to characters with long hair.
Nicole and Lucas dressed as Griffith and Guts from the comic book “Berserk.” They made everything over the course of about three months. Nicole had to remake the foam sword three weeks before Comic Con. Luca’s suit is also crafted from foam, and underneath is a spandex suit.
