The New School Free Press Management Team is happy to announce the opening of the Spring 2024 leadership application! If you are interested in applying for a leadership position within the newsroom, please fill out this form by 11:59 pm on Sunday, January 7, 2024. Descriptions of the available roles can be found below. The Management Team will be allocating positions before the end of winter break.
IMPORTANT: You must be enrolled in the New School Free Press course, or be available to attend class sessions every week in order to be eligible for any of the roles below. During the Spring 2024 semester, the team will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 – 5:40 pm. If you submit an application for the roles below, we will assume you can meet this requirement. News Editor (2)
The News Editors are responsible for leading the News section which includes: editing all news pieces, reviewing pitches from reporters, assigning stories when necessary, and writing at least 2 articles per semester. News editors will work closely with reporters throughout the publishing process to ensure accurate and relevant news stories are written on a timely basis. The News Editor will also be responsible for managing the coverage of breaking news on campus. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Arts and Culture Editor (2)
The Arts and Culture editors are responsible for leading the Arts and Culture section; editing all Arts and Culture stories, reviewing pitches from reporters, assigning stories when needed, publishing Arts and Culture stories on the NSFP website, and writing at least 2 articles per semester. Will work closely with reporters to publish Arts and Culture stories about a range of topics, which include (but are not limited to): music, fashion, food, sports, and visual arts. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Opinion Editor (1)
The Opinions Editor is responsible for leading the Opinions section which includes: editing all opinion pieces, reviewing/fielding pitches from freelancers and reporters, managing any assigned opinions series, and writing at least 2 articles per semester. The Opinions Editor will work closely with their reporters throughout the publishing process to create strong, informed, and focused opinion pieces about issues of relevance to our targeted audience. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Features Editor (1)
The Features Editor is responsible for leading the Features section; editing all feature stories, reviewing pitches from reporters, assigning stories when needed, publishing feature stories on the NSFP website, and writing at least 2 articles per semester. Will work closely with reporters and edit longform, in-depth stories about a range of topics. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Multimedia Editor (1)
The Multimedia Editor is responsible for all things photo and video, including all photographers and videographers in the team. They will be handling photo-visual-requests for stories as well as editing in post. This includes colour grading, framing and photo editing in Photoshop and Lightroom. You’ll be working closely with your photographers and videographers as well as the reporters under the other desks. You will be managing video requests too, and thus are required to have knowledge primarily of Premiere Pro and additionally of After Effects. Bigger projects have typically included masthead photography, NSFP Live, and creating stock images that can be used by the press as a whole. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Illustration Editor (1)
The Illustration Editor is responsible for all illustrators in the team and managing visual requests concerning illustrations. They are also in charge of the Sunday Artist Showcase (SAS) Series which includes scouting and curating artists’ works on a weekly basis. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to take up this position. This position also comes with the occasional time crunch, so the editor must also be both willing and capable of sometimes taking up tasks at short notice. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Head of Copy (1)
The Head of Copy is in charge of managing the Free Press’s team of copy editors. Copy is one of the most critical steps in the timeline of getting a story (or any other written content) published, and includes proofreading, fact-checking and editing to make sure grammar, syntax and punctuation are used correctly and the Free Press’s style guide is followed. This position occasionally involves being available to edit important breaking pieces on a time crunch, so the Head of Copy must allocate responsibilities appropriately so that they, or a copy editor on the team is available to do so. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Head of Audience Engagement (1)
The Head of Audience Engagement is responsible for outreach and ‘brand’ image. This person will: create monthly analytics reports to share with the team/class, plan outreach events, correspond to have a presence at events with relevant audiences/ participants, work with the visuals team to design posters, help produce and expand the Free Press newsletter, help grow our team by bringing on new freelancers, and work with the social media team to create engaging content to help grow readership. You must be enrolled in the class or able to attend meetings to apply.
Head of Social Media (1)
The Head of Social Media is responsible for managing the social media team: creating weekly posting schedules and ensuring things are posted in a timely manner, working with the visuals team to create a succinct feed, developing and expanding our social media reach. Should have flexible availability in case of breaking news stories etc. Proficiency in Figma, Instagram, Facebook, Linktree, X, and TikTok preferred.
